Do you need a licence to rent a boat in Denmark?
Not for an ordinary leisure boat under 15 metres — but yes if the boat is a planing speedboat. That requires a speedboat certificate, and the requirement follows whoever has their hands on the wheel at any given moment, owner or renter alike.
Denmark does not tie its licence to birth year the way Norway does. The requirement hangs on the type of boat: if the hull planes and the engine is large enough relative to the length, a speedboat certificate is needed — regardless of who owns the boat.
The main rule: no requirement under 15 metres
The Danish Maritime Authority states it plainly: there is no requirement for formal competence to operate a leisure vessel under 15 metres, unless it falls under the rules for speedboats and jet skis.
In other words, a displacement launch or an ordinary sailing boat under 15 metres needs no certificate. It is the speedboat exception that makes the question worth asking at all.
The exception: speedboats need a certificate
If the boat is under 4 metres and planing, with an engine of 19 kW / 25 hp or more, you need a speedboat certificate.
If the boat is between 4 and 15 metres and planing, engine power measured against length decides. The Maritime Authority publishes a calculator where you enter length and power and get the answer — use it rather than guessing.
If you are unsure whether the boat you are considering falls inside the rule, ask the owner for length and engine power before you book. It takes a minute and settles whether you may lawfully operate it.
What 'planing' means
The definition sits in the Danish speedboat regulation. A planing leisure vessel is one without a real keel, with a pure V-shaped bottom or a flat bottom in the aftmost third — or a vessel built so that the hull lifts partly out of the water at a certain speed.
In practice that captures RIBs, day cruisers and most fast motorboats. A heavy keeled sailing boat it does not.
The certificate follows the helm — including when you rent
This is the point that matters most on a rental marketplace, and the Maritime Authority puts it in its own words: the rules always apply when you are the operator, whether you are renting the speedboat or own it.
Whoever is manoeuvring the speedboat at any given time — hands on the wheel — must hold the certificate. If several of you will take turns during the day, each of you needs it. One certificate in the group is not enough.
Age: test from 15, helm from 16
You may sit the speedboat test once you turn 15, but you may not lawfully operate a speedboat until you turn 16.
Tests are held by approved providers rather than by the Maritime Authority itself, and it is the provider who issues your certificate once you pass.
From 15 metres upwards
Leisure vessels with a hull length between 15 and 24 metres must carry both a master and a mate holding professional certificates. Which ones depends on the trading area — for the Baltic and the North Sea east of 7 degrees east, a Yachtmaster 3rd grade is required.
This sits far above what private owners normally rent out, but it explains why the 15-metre threshold reappears in the alcohol rules.
Liability insurance
Denmark has separate rules requiring liability insurance for jet skis, speedboats and similar craft. If you are renting a fast boat, this is worth settling with the owner before you cast off.
Sailfloat is not a party to the rental agreement and provides no insurance. Cover is something the owner and renter must have in place between them.
