How to rent a boat without a boating licence
Without a licence you can rent a boat under 8 metres with an engine of 25 hp or less — or rent a boat with a skipper and let someone else helm it.
No boating licence does not mean no boating. Two legal routes are open, and one of them puts a local who knows the water on board with you.
Route 1: a boat below the thresholds
If the boat is under 8 metres with an engine of 25 hp or less, no licence is required — whatever your birth year. That covers a large share of the boats people actually want for a calm summer day: classic snekke, small day cruisers, and most rental boats meant for the fjord.
Remember the age rule regardless: if the engine is more than 10 hp, the operator must be at least 16.
Route 2: a boat with a skipper
Rent a boat with a skipper and the skipper operates it, so you need no papers of your own. It is the simplest route to the larger boats — and to waters you do not know.
For many it is also the better first experience: you get someone local who knows where it is beautiful, where it is shallow, and where the weather turns.
What to ask before booking
Ask for engine output in hp and length in metres or feet, not just the boat model. Those are the numbers that decide, and they are not always stated clearly in the listing.
Check too whether the owner sets requirements beyond the law. Many do — that is allowed, and it is often a good sign.
Should you take the test anyway?
The Norwegian boating test can be taken from age 14 and covers the rules of the sea, navigation, markers and emergencies. Even if you are exempt, this is the knowledge that matters when the wind picks up or you meet a ferry in a narrow sound.
